A fatal wrong-way crash on State Route 70 near Striplin Road in Sutter County left one person dead and an infant hospitalized on Tuesday night, January 20, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, emergency crews responded to the scene at about 7:26 p.m. after reports of a vehicle traveling the wrong direction on the highway.
Authorities said a white Volkswagen Tiguan was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with a red Toyota Corolla traveling southbound.
CHP officials stated that a vehicle matching the Tiguan’s description was reported traveling the wrong way near Striplin Road shortly before the crash.
The driver of the Corolla, an adult man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Tiguan, an adult woman, suffered major injuries and was transported to a hospital. An approximately 1-year-old infant inside the Tiguan was also taken to a hospital for evaluation. The infant’s condition was not immediately available.
Investigators reported that the cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it is unclear whether alcohol or drugs were factors.
