A 33-year-old driver and his 31-year-old passenger were killed in a solo-vehicle crash in Newark on Thursday evening, September 25, 2025.
According to police, the crash occurred around 5:28 p.m. on westbound Thornton Avenue near Hickory Street.
A Toyota Prius crashed into a tree, causing the passenger to be ejected. Emergency responders pronounced both men dead at the scene. The victims were identified as driver Anthony M. of Hayward and passenger Luis D. of Union City.
Police reported that initial investigations indicate the driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road. Authorities are investigating whether speed or impairment were factors.
