A bicyclist is in critical condition following a hit-and-run crash involving a suspected intoxicated driver in Hayward on Saturday morning, December 7, 2024.
The crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. when a bicyclist was traveling on Lewelling Boulevard at Hesperian Boulevard.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a red Hyundai Elantra struck the cyclist and then fled the scene.
The victim was transported to a local trauma hospital and remains in critical condition.
Officers from the Hayward Police Department located the Elantra and attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver initially stopped but then fled on foot before being detained shortly after.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and felony DUI. The driver was booked into the San Rita Jail.
The investigation is ongoing.
