One person was killed, and two others were injured in a suspected DUI crash in Mecca, Riverside County, on Wednesday morning, July 29, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers were dispatched at around 7:01 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 10 near the Cactus Rest Area.
Investigators said a Tesla Model 3 traveling in the No. 1 lane was struck from behind by a Kia Forte that was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed. The impact caused both vehicles to veer out of control and overturn in the median.
Authorities said a passenger in the Kia, identified as 33-year-old Alexis D. of Desert Hot Springs, was ejected during the rollover and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The drivers of both the Tesla and the Kia sustained moderate to major injuries and were transported to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment.
CHP said alcohol and/or drugs are suspected to have been contributing factors in the collision. Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact Officer J. Young of the CHP.
