Two people were killed following a wrong-way collision on southbound Interstate 5 in downtown San Diego early Friday morning, May 29, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported around 3 a.m. when a Dodge Durango, driven by a 56-year-old man from El Cajon, collided with a white Honda CRV, driven by 62-year-old Jesus V. of Bonita, south of Laurel Street. The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire.
Authorities reported that the driver of the Dodge Durango was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the Honda CRV was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.
CHP officials stated that toxicology reports are pending to determine whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. Investigators are also working to determine which vehicle was traveling the wrong way.
Authorities continue to investigate the collision.
