A 63-year-old man died after being found submerged in a septic tank while working at a fast-food restaurant in Yermo, San Bernardino County, on Friday morning, May 22, 2026.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. at the Jack in the Box located in the 35000 block of Ghost Town Road.
The victim, identified as Robert A. II of Mira Loma, was collecting samples from the septic tank for a water technology company when the accident occurred.
Authorities reported that Robert may have been overcome by fumes before falling into the tank. Emergency personnel recovered his body and transported it to the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office.
HazMat crews and multiple fire engines responded due to hazardous conditions in the confined space. Officials stated that no signs of foul play were present, and the case is being investigated as a death investigation by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
The investigation remains ongoing.
