A 54-year-old man was killed, and two others were injured after a trench wall collapsed at a construction site in Long Beach on Tuesday evening, May 19, 2026.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. at the Long Beach Rescue Mission Lydia House shelter for women and children in the 1400 block of Pacific Avenue.
Authorities stated that the victim was working on a trench wall during expansion work at the shelter when the power cable trench collapsed. The man, identified as Martin R., died from mechanical asphyxia beneath dirt and rubble, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, which ruled the death accidental.
Two additional workers were injured in the collapse, though the extent of their injuries was not immediately released.
Long Beach officials stated that the investigation into the collapse remains in its early stages.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
