One person was killed following a crash that sparked a vegetation fire in Escondido on Saturday afternoon, May 9, 2026.
According to Cal Fire, the incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Shirey Road near the 32100 block in the Deer Springs area.
Authorities reported that a vehicle crashed and caught fire, igniting a brush fire that spread to approximately 100 by 100 feet near the roadway.
One person died as a result of the collision. Officials stated that a passenger survived the crash and did not require medical treatment.
Fire crews responded to the area and stopped the forward progress of the vegetation fire.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
