[04-23-2026] San Diego County, CA – Hit-and-Run Driver Flees After Head-On Collision on South Mission Rd Near Hellers Bend.webpAuthorities are searching for a driver who fled the scene of a severe head-on collision late Thursday night, April 23, 2026, near Hellers Bend in San Diego County.

The collision, involving a black sedan and a gray Toyota SUV, was reported around 9:30 p.m. on South Mission Road. At least one vehicle sustained significant front-end damage in the crash.

First responders from the North County Fire Protection District arrived shortly after 9:31 p.m. and evaluated the occupants of the vehicles. The severity of their injuries was not immediately known.

San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies temporarily closed the roadway to secure the area and search for the driver who fled on foot. Tow trucks were dispatched to clear the vehicles, and the scene was cleared by 10:00 p.m.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident and is still searching for the hit-and-run driver.
