[04-11-2026] San Diego County, CA – One Killed in Fiery Crash Involving Tow Truck on South Bay Freeway in Bonita.webpAt least one person was killed after a car crashed into the back of a tow truck and caught fire on the South Bay (54) Freeway in Bonita, San Diego County, on Saturday afternoon, April 11, 2026.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported at around 3:34 p.m. on the eastbound South Bay Freeway west of the South Bay (125) Expressway.

Investigators report that the tow truck was stopped on the right-hand shoulder while picking up a vehicle when a car struck it from behind. The impact caused both the car and the towed vehicle to catch fire, blocking lanes 2 and 3 and prompting a SigAlert.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office was called to the scene at around 4:43 p.m. Authorities have not released the identity of the person who died in the crash.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
