[03-15-2026] Merced County, CA – Car Crashes into Shed in Atwater, Trapping Two People Inside (1).webpA car went airborne and landed on top of a shed in Atwater on Sunday afternoon, March 15, 2026, trapping two people inside.

According to the Atwater Police Department, the crash occurred on Santa Fe Drive near Wallace Road. 

Investigators said the sedan was attempting to pass another vehicle at high speed when the driver lost control, hit an embankment, broke through a chain-link fence, and became airborne before striking a parked car and landing on the shed.

A neighbor said that emergency crews pulled a woman from the shed, but a man remained pinned inside. The witness explained that the car fell headfirst, striking the man in the chest. The man was heard yelling for help as first responders worked urgently to free him.

The man was eventually extricated and appeared to be in “pretty rough shape,” according to the neighbor.

Police said one person inside the shed and the driver of the sedan were both taken to the hospital. Their conditions have not been released.
