Two children suffered major injuries in a crash on Highway 156 near Cathedral Oak Road in the Prunedale area in Monterey County on Sunday afternoon, February 22, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a 25-year-old man was driving an SUV eastbound around 4:42 p.m. with an adult female passenger, a 6-year-old boy, and a 7-month-old girl. For reasons still under investigation, the SUV crossed into the westbound lane and collided with a tree.
The driver and the adult female passenger were transported to a local hospital with suspected minor injuries. The 6-year-old boy and 7-month-old girl were taken to a hospital with suspected major injuries.
CHP stated that alcohol or drugs are believed to be factors in the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.
