According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident was reported around 8:07 a.m. after authorities received multiple calls about a traffic collision blocking all eastbound lanes of Highway 58 east of Towerline Road.

CHP Bakersfield Area units responded to the scene, along with Kern County Fire Department personnel and emergency medical responders. Due to the size and severity of the incident, officials activated a mass-casualty response and requested assistance from the CHP Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team.

Preliminary information from CHP indicates that 43 vehicles were involved in the crash. Investigators believe weather conditions may have been a factor, as witnesses reported extremely heavy fog in the area, with visibility estimated at 50-60 feet. 

Nine people were transported to four separate hospitals, suffering injuries ranging from minor to major.
