[01-11-2026] Orange County, CA – Man Killed After Driving Wrong Way on 55 Freeway in Costa Mesa

A man was killed after driving the wrong way and crashing on the northbound 55 Freeway near Bison Avenue in Costa Mesa late Sunday night, January 11, 2026.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident was first reported around 10:35 p.m. when a white SUV was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of the 55 Freeway in the No. 1 lane. 

Authorities said the vehicle crashed into at least one other vehicle and came to rest beneath the Corona del Mar (73) Freeway overpass. Paramedics attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but the driver was later pronounced dead.

The investigation is ongoing.
