[09-12-2025] Suspected DUI Driver Seriously Injured in Crash on Highway 101 Just North of Santa MariaA suspected DUI driver suffered major injuries in a crash on Highway 101 just north of Santa Maria on Friday afternoon, September 12, 2025.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after 1:00 p.m. Michael R., 45, of Santa Maria, was driving northbound at a high rate of speed and attempted to pass traffic using the center median. 

Michael lost control of his 2015 Nissan in the left-hand lane, struck the center divider, then veered back into the lane and collided with a 2024 GMC driven by a 30-year-old man from Yuba City.

Michael’s vehicle continued onto the right-hand shoulder, crashed into a eucalyptus tree, and caught fire. He was transported by AMR ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria, where he was treated for major injuries. Michael was placed under arrest at the hospital on suspicion of DUI. The other driver’s name was not released.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and charges are pending with the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office.
