According to the California Highway Patrol, an automated crash notification was received from an iPhone at around 11:52 p.m., alerting authorities to the incident.

The circumstances surrounding the crash were not immediately available. Paramedics transported three individuals from the scene by ambulance to a local hospital with major injuries.

Southbound traffic on the freeway was held at Imperial Avenue while crews worked to remove the wreckage.

The CHP is investigating the cause of the crash.
