A 51-year-old man from Brawley was killed, and several others were injured in a multi-vehicle collision in Imperial County on Saturday evening, December 21, 2024.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. on State Route (SR) 111 near McCabe Road.
The driver of a 1996 Toyota Camry was traveling northbound on SR 111 when he veered into the dirt median and entered the southbound lanes. The Toyota collided with a 2003 Ford F-150 driven by a 39-year-old man from El Centro.
Following the initial crash, a 2022 Volkswagen Taos driven by a 49-year-old man from Mexicali collided with the Ford F-150 after being unable to avoid the impact. Meanwhile, a 28-year-old woman from Fontana driving a 2023 Toyota Camry attempted to avoid the crash but veered into the dirt median, crossed the northbound lanes, and struck a barbed wire fence on the shoulder.
The driver of the 1996 Toyota Camry succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The Imperial County Coroner’s Office responded and is withholding the victim’s name pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the Ford F-150 sustained moderate injuries and was airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The driver of the Volkswagen Taos and his passengers suffered minor injuries and were transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center for treatment.
CHP reported that all involved drivers, except the deceased, were wearing seatbelts. It is unknown if impairment played a role in the crash.
The incident remains under investigation.
