Published August 2, 2024

One person was killed, while another was injured after a fiery single-vehicle crash in Yermo, San Bernardino County, early Thursday morning, August 1, 2024.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal accident happened just after 12:40 a.m. on the 15 Freeway just east of Ghost Town Road in Yermo, about 8 miles east of Barstow.

CHP stated that a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by a 24-year-old woman with a 22-year-old female passenger was going south on the 15 Freeway at an unknown speed. For some reason, the driver allowed the Chevy to veer to the right and into the open desert.

It continued going through the desert before ultimately hitting a metal fence. The Chevy then overturned southwesterly before coming to a rest at an unspecified orientation. Moments later, the vehicle burst into flames.

It is said that the driver was ejected out of the vehicle as it was rolling over. Responding medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene. Further information about the identity of the deceased will be released after her family is notified.

The passenger, meanwhile, managed to extricate herself from the burning car and headed toward a nearby gas station to ask for help. She reportedly sustained minor injuries but declined medical transport.

No further details were immediately available. CHP is still investigating the official cause of the accident and the factors that may have contributed to it.

Potential witnesses to the fatal crash are asked to contact the authorities at (760) 255-5900.
