A man was killed after a two-vehicle hit-and-run collision involving speeding in Oakland on Wednesday night, July 24, 2024.
According to the Oakland Police Department, the incident happened at about 10:35 p.m. at the intersection of 38th Avenue and Carrington Street in the eastern part of the city.
Based on the surveillance video recovered, a Honda Fit was traveling northbound along 38th Avenue at unsafe speeds and failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection with Carrington Street. At the same time, an Acura TL was going west on Carrington Street and also failed to stop for the stop sign before proceeding through the intersection.
The Acura then broadsided the Honda before rolling over and hitting two parked vehicles nearby. The Honda, meanwhile, was pushed by the impact of the crash into a separate set of cars before coming to a rest. It is not immediately known if there were any people inside the struck parked vehicles.
Witnesses told the authorities that a man got out of the Honda after the crash and began gathering items inside the car before running toward the curb. He then reportedly collapsed and was pronounced dead at the spot when responders arrived.
The deceased’s name, age, and place of origin were not provided. It is unclear if he was the driver or a passenger in the Honda. Police have yet to disclose what the items were that the deceased tried saving from the wreckage.
Witnesses also said that a second occupant of the Honda got out of the vehicle and fled the scene before police could arrive. The driver of the Acura reportedly ran away from the scene as well.
Police said speed was the principal factor in the accident, but the possible involvement of drugs or alcohol is being investigated.
