[07-22-2024] San Diego County, CA – Pedestrian Killed After Being Struck By Vehicle Along I-5 in Encinitas

A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle in Encinitas on Monday afternoon, July 22, 2024. 

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal crash happened around 2:30 p.m. on Interstate 5, north of Birmingham Drive, near San Elijo State Beach. 

Authorities stated that a pedestrian, whose name, age, and gender were not immediately known, was struck by a vehicle on the southbound side of the freeway. The victim, who appeared to be homeless, sustained major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. 

It is unknown what the victim was doing on the roadway before the crash. There is no word yet whether or not the driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian remained at the scene. 

As of this writing, the authorities are investigating the case to determine whether alcohol, drugs, or speeding contributed to the collision. The official cause of the incident is unclear.
