At least one person was killed following a five-vehicle collision in Pacheco, Contra Costa County, late Sunday night, July 14, 2024.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened around 10:55 p.m. on southbound Interstate 680, north of the Concord Avenue off-ramp.
The five vehicles involved in the crash were later identified as a Volkswagen, a Toyota Prius, a Toyota Corolla, a Honda Civic, and a Chevrolet Tahoe. Upon arrival, CHP found one vehicle overturned while the Civic was seen facing the wrong way. It is unclear how the crash happened or who started it. The total number of people involved was also undisclosed.
At least one person was declared dead following the vehicular accident. As of this writing, it is unknown whether the deceased was a driver of one of the vehicles involved or a passenger on any of them. The authorities have yet to identify the person who died publicly.
The southbound lanes of I-680 around the area were closed off as a precaution. CHP said that a center divider wall along the freeway was also damaged due to the collision.
The investigation into the deadly accident is ongoing.
