Two people were critically injured following a motorcycle vs. vehicle crash in East Oakland on Monday night, July 8, 2024.
According to the Oakland Police Department, the serious traffic incident happened around 8:18 p.m. in the 8000 block of International Boulevard.
Police reported that a man and a woman in their 20s were riding a dirt bike as driver and passenger, respectively, heading westbound along a designated bus-only lane at about 65 mph. At the same time, a 2001 Toyota Avalon driven by another man was also traveling westbound on International Avenue and was turning left onto 80th Avenue.
The Toyota hit the motorcycle at the intersection. It is said that the impact of the collision threw both occupants of the dirt bike onto the roadway, inflicting serious injuries.
The male driver of the dirt bike suffered severe body trauma and was later picked up by an unidentified person along with the crashed motorcycle. Notably, they left out the female passenger in the roadway. The person who picked up the man then dropped him off at a hospital for further medical care before driving off with the dirt bike.
Meanwhile, the woman who was left out also sustained severe injuries, particularly in the head. She was transported to a nearby hospital via ground ambulance. OPD said they found only one helmet at the scene, but they have not yet identified who among the two injured riders was wearing it.
The Toyota driver appeared uninjured following the incident. Police said the driver remained at the scene for questioning and cooperated with the investigators.
None of the parties involved have been publicly identified yet. Further information will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
