An 18-year-old man was killed after a bicycle vs. vehicle collision in Signal Hill on Tuesday evening, June 18, 2024.
According to the Signal Hill Police Department, the fatal crash happened at about 7:35 p.m. at the intersection of Skyline Drive and Cherry Avenue.
SHPD stated that the cyclist, Raider M., was training with two friends when the accident occurred. Raider M. was heading westbound on Skyline Drive when he supposedly ran a red light at the intersection with Cherry Avenue and crashed into a moving vehicle.
The collision killed the cyclist. Meanwhile, the unnamed driver of the vehicle that struck him stayed at the scene and cooperated with the authorities. No other injuries were reported.
The family of the deceased is currently working hard to dispute the claims made by the police regarding the incident. According to them, Raider M. had the green light and the right of way when he was hit, and they have several witnesses ready to prove it.
They added that the police based their finding on a video from a grocery store that did not show the traffic lights at the intersection.
Candles and flowers have since been set up at the northeast corner of the intersection, which now serves as a roadside memorial for the deceased bicyclist. The family is asking for donations to bury the young man, who had plans to join the Marines after recently graduating from Poly High School.
As of Tuesday, June 25, 2024, the family’s GoFundMe page has gained over $6,000 toward its goal of $30,000.
