A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle in Oceanside early Tuesday morning, June 25, 2024.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal crash happened around 1:50 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the SR-78 between Jefferson Street and El Camino Real.
Authorities stated that a pedestrian, whose name, age, and place of origin were not disclosed, was walking in the middle of traffic lanes on the freeway when he was fatally struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian, identified only as a man, sustained injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told the authorities that the driver who hit the man took off in a vehicle heading east. The police found a Mercedes convertible, which was possibly involved in the crash, in the parking lot of a grocery store in the 2200 block of South El Camino Real. It is believed that the driver pulled over into the store to call and report the incident.
There is no word yet on how the collision occurred. As of this writing, the official cause of the crash is unknown. Additional details regarding the incident will be released once they are available.
