One person was killed, while three others were injured following a two-vehicle head-on crash in Cambria, San Luis Obispo County, on Sunday afternoon, May 19, 2024.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly collision happened at about 3:20 p.m. in the northbound lane of Highway 1, north of Burton Drive.
CHP officers said that a vehicle occupied by two people was traveling northbound on Highway 1 when, for some reason, it veered into the southbound lane and directly in front of another vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision.
The driver of the vehicle that swerved into the opposite lane, a 20-year-old woman from Rocklin, was fatally injured as a result of the incident. Her passenger, a 19-year-old Flagstaff, Arizona resident, was transported to a nearby hospital after sustaining major injuries.
The southbound vehicle that got hit also had two occupants at the time of the crash. The driver, a 56-year-old man, sustained major injuries, while his passenger, a 59-year-old woman, suffered moderate injuries. Both were taken to the hospital for further medical care.
CHP believes that driver impairment and distracted driving are not factors in the fatal collision.
Additional information was not immediately available. Police work is underway.
