[09-17-2023] Fatal Crash in West Ukiah Claims One Life, Leaves Another Severely InjuredOne person was killed, and another was severely injured after a car collided with a tree in Western Ukiah on Sunday evening, September 17, 2023.

According to Cal Fire, the incident occurred along Live Oak Avenue just before 5:30 p.m., near the Ukiah Valley Golf Course and Todd Grove Park.

Emergency responders reported a car colliding with a tree. One vehicle occupant sustained significant injuries and was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital via a REACH helicopter for medical attention.

Officials said the second person, who had to be extracted from the wreckage, did not survive, as confirmed by emergency personnel.

Information regarding the factors that led to this incident and the identity of the deceased and injured individuals are currently undisclosed.

As per the latest data released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 42,795 fatalities resulting from vehicle accidents in 2022. This indicates a slight decline of 0.3% compared to the 42,939 reported fatalities in 2021.

The fatality rate, which stood at 1.37 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles in 2021, decreased to 1.35 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles in 2022. Notably, approximately 1% more Americans were actively engaged in driving activities during 2022 compared to the peak of the pandemic year.

Furthermore, there is an expectation that the number of fatalities in the final quarter of 2022 will experience a decrease. This marks the third consecutive quarterly reduction in deaths, following a trend that commenced after seven consecutive quarterly increases beginning in the third quarter of 2020.

In terms of specific states, California recorded an estimated 4,407 fatalities in 2022, indicating a 2.8% increase compared to the previous year’s count of 4,285.
