[09-04-2023] San Mateo County, CA – Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Caltrain in Redwood City

A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a Caltrain in Redwood City on Monday evening, September 4, 2023.

According to the Redwood City Police Department, the incident was reported around 8:54 p.m. on 1 James Avenue at Redwood City Station.

Authorities stated that a train approaching the station from the south struck the pedestrian. The impact of the crash killed the victim. While emergency personnel responded, the train’s 166 passengers were evacuated.

There were no other injuries reported. Officials said the events leading up to the crash remain unclear.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing.

It is the 10th Caltrain collision death in 2023. The ninth occurred late last month when a train struck a pedestrian in Belmont.

According to the National Safety Council, train accidents resulted in the deaths of 893 individuals in 2021, which represents a 20% increase from the previous year’s total of 744. Additionally, hospital admissions for injuries that could have been fatal increased by 4%, or 5,780 individuals, between 2020 and 2021, with a 21% increase in fatalities at highway-rail grade crossings during the same period.

Roughly one-third of train accident victims eventually recover from their injuries, while it was estimated that train accidents caused 266 out of the 893 pedestrian fatalities in 2021. Over 3,216 commuters were injured in train accidents that year, and if these injuries were more severe, they could have been fatal.
