[08-31-2023] Fresno County, CA – 12-Year-Old Girl Hospitalized After Being Struck by Truck on Weldon and West Avenues

A 12-year-old girl pedestrian was hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle in Fresno on Thursday afternoon, August 31, 2023.

Officers received a dispatch at around 4:10 p.m. about a girl who had been struck at the intersection of Weldon and West Avenues, according to the Fresno Police Department.

Authorities stated that the victim was walking home from school when a truck traveling southbound on West Avenue struck her.

According to officials, the driver failed to notice the girl crossing the street until it was too late. The truck collided with the pedestrian despite the driver’s attempts to avoid her.

The 12-year-old was conscious and alert when transported to the hospital for treatment. Police said the driver was not impaired at the time of the collision.

No additional information was disclosed regarding the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.

In 2020, hit-and-run crashes accounted for over one-quarter (24.3 percent) of all pedestrian fatalities or 16.8 percent of all collision fatalities.
