One person suffered major injuries after a three-vehicle collision on Interstate 580 east of Castro Valley Boulevard in Castro Valley in Alameda County on Monday afternoon, December 16, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 2:50 p.m. and involved a car and a tow truck that was transporting an unoccupied vehicle.
CHP stated that the empty vehicle was dislodged during the collision and subsequently sent onto nearby BART tracks. Authorities reported that the tow truck driver sustained major injuries. The crash also sparked a brush fire, according to the Alameda County Fire Department.
Officials said the incident led to temporary lane closures on the highway and suspended BART service between Castro Valley and West Dublin/Pleasanton. Rail service was later partially restored, with trains sharing a single track while crews worked to remove the vehicle and make repairs.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
