A 56-year-old driver from Alturas was killed, and two young passengers were injured in a head-on crash with a big rig on State Route 299 west of Spicer Lane in Modoc County, on Saturday morning, December 6, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 9:25 a.m. when the eastbound Ford carrying the three occupants turned into the westbound lane for reasons still under investigation.
A westbound Kenworth truck driven by a 65-year-old Klamath Falls man struck the Ford. The Ford driver died at the scene. The Modoc County Coroner has not yet released the person’s name pending notification of the family.
Two children in the Ford, ages 4 and 2, were taken to Modoc Medical Center and later flown by air ambulance to Renown Regional Medical Center. The truck driver was not injured. CHP stated that drugs and alcohol were not factors and that all occupants were properly restrained.
Both vehicles came to rest near the crash site, with the Ford stopping in the eastbound lane and the Kenworth ending up partially in the eastbound lane and on the south shoulder.
The investigation is ongoing.
