A 68-year-old pedestrian, Irving M., was fatally struck by a pickup truck in Hayward on Monday night, November 25, 2024.
The collision occurred at approximately 9:54 p.m. near the intersection of Jackson and Santa Clara streets.
Hayward police arrived to find the pedestrian with severe injuries. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities reported that the victim was not in a crosswalk when the crash occurred.
Witnesses told police that the driver of a small pickup truck, a 55-year-old Hayward man, initially stayed at the scene but fled, leaving behind a license plate belonging to the involved vehicle. Officers later located the driver nearby, conducted a traffic stop, and took a statement before releasing him.
Police are investigating whether the driver was at fault for the collision and whether it qualifies as a hit-and-run. It is unclear how long the driver remained at the scene before leaving.
Authorities have not determined whether alcohol was a factor in the collision.
