Whether you are the injured victim or the family of a killed loved one, here’s what to do after a hit-and-run accident:

  1. Check yourself for injuries. You should move to an area far from traffic to be safe.
  2. Call 911 to report the accident. You will be able to receive medical assistance from them. If a hit-and-run is reported, the dispatcher should be informed to take the necessary steps.
  3. Identify the fleeing vehicle as accurately as possible. Describe its make, model, color, license plate number (even a partial plate can be helpful), and any distinctive characteristics.
  4. Obtain the contact information of the witnesses. The witnesses may be willing to provide police with their statements after witnessing the accident.
  5. Take pictures of the scene of the accident, your car, and any injuries you see. You will be able to use these later as evidence to back up your claims if needed.
  6. Inform your insurance company of the accident immediately.  Whether or not you decide to file a claim with them, they can guide you through the next steps in the process.
  7. Get medical help right away. If you do not need precautions, take them anyway, as complications may occur.
  8. Keep all evidence of the accident. A damaged garment or other personal belonging may be included in this category. For your claim to be valid, you must provide this evidence.
  9. Consult a hit-and-run attorney in California. A lawyer can guide you through the legal process and maximize your chances of receiving compensation if you are injured.
