[09-19-2023] Fresno County, CA – Unidentified Pedestrian Injured Following Suspected DUI Crash on Hughes Avenue

An unidentified pedestrian was hit by a vehicle while crossing the road in Fresno on Tuesday morning, September 19, 2023.

Fresno Police Department reported the victim was struck while using a walker to cross Hughes Avenue between Weber and Cornell Avenues, which officers shortly blocked.

Officers investigated and found the vehicle’s driver without a valid license, and they evaluated the occupant for a possible DUI. The injured victim was transported by ambulance to Community Regional Medical Center.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reported that larger vehicles are more likely to be in accidents when turning, and people who are struck by large vehicles suffer injuries more seriously.

Pickup trucks had a much higher risk (269.6% increase) of being involved in fatal left-turn crashes than passenger cars. Minivans and large vans saw a 172% increase, while pickups and SUVs had a 93.6% increase in these accidents.
