One person was killed and another was injured after a head-on collision on the Corona del Mar (73) Freeway in Newport Beach on Sunday night, September 15, 2024.
According to the California Highway Patrol, calls began coming in at 9:26 p.m. reporting a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes at a high rate of speed. The head-on collision occurred at 9:30 p.m. just north of Macarthur Boulevard.
Witnesses reported that the SUV, a Range Rover, exploded and was engulfed in flames. The driver of the Range Rover was confirmed dead at the scene, while the driver of the electric BMW sedan sustained injuries.
All southbound lanes were shut down due to debris scattered across the freeway and traffic was diverted off at Campus Drive. The lanes were reopened at 2:10 a.m. Monday.
