According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded to the collision at around 10:35 p.m. A Honda SUV was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when it collided with a BMW sedan.

The Honda driver was identified as 57-year-old Norma H. of Irvine. She was killed in the collision.

The BMW driver, identified as 39-year-old Joseph M. of Rancho Santa Margarita, was also killed. A 7-year-old girl who was riding in the passenger seat of the BMW was hospitalized. Authorities did not release information about her condition.

Investigators said it remained unclear whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.

No further details were released, and the crash remains under investigation.
