Pedestrian Accident Statistics

There has been a noticeable increase in pedestrian fatalities and injuries across the United States. According to data from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), while there was an overall decrease of 14% in traffic-related fatalities between 2007 and 2016, there was a significant 27% increase in pedestrian fatalities during that period. In 2016 alone, the country recorded a troubling total of 5,977 pedestrian fatalities, averaging approximately 88 lives lost daily.

Furthermore, medical institutions documented a combined total of 137,000 instances of pedestrian injuries in 2017. It’s essential to highlight that California experienced a notably high number of pedestrian fatalities, with 893 deaths and over 14,000 injuries in 2012. This research underscores California’s prominent position compared to other states regarding pedestrian fatalities and severe injuries.

The leading factors contributing to most pedestrian accidents often involve vehicles failing to yield to pedestrians or making sudden stops. If you are contemplating seeking legal counsel, we recommend consulting an experienced attorney specializing in handling such cases.
