[09-06-2025] At Least One Killed in Head-On Crash on Ortega Highway in Rancho Mission ViejoAt least one person was killed in a head-on collision between a Ford Mustang and a Ford SUV on Ortega (74) Highway in Rancho Mission Viejo, Orange County, on Saturday afternoon, September 6, 2025.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 3:00 p.m. in the 35900 block of Ortega Highway near Ronald W. Caspers Regional Park. 

CHP reported that the impact sent the white Ford Explorer approximately 15 feet down the westbound embankment, while the gray Mustang came to rest in the lanes.

Authorities stated that the fatality or fatalities occurred at Mission Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo. The Orange County Coroner’s Office was not called to the scene, and officers planned to continue the investigation at the hospital. Orange County Animal Control was summoned to retrieve a small dog from one of the vehicles.

The CHP issued a temporary closure of lanes on both sides of the highway at 3:17 p.m.; all lanes reopened at 4:40 p.m.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
