According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision was reported shortly before 8:40 p.m. at the intersection of Road 9 and Avenue 21.

CHP said a Honda CR-V with five occupants was traveling north on Road 9 when a GMC Sierra carrying two people failed to stop at a stop sign on Avenue 21 and collided with the Honda. The GMC struck the left side of the Honda, causing major damage.

Four occupants of the Honda were pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified as Pedro G., 42; his 13-year-old son; Gerardo A., 36; and Cayetano M., 52. All four were from Merced County.

The condition of the Honda’s surviving passenger and the two people in the GMC was not immediately available.

CHP said it remains unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.

The investigation is ongoing.
