[08-16-2025] 54-Year-Old Berkeley Woman Killed in Bicycle Crash at Shattuck Avenue Near 51st and 52nd Streets in OaklandA 54-year-old woman from Berkeley died after a bicycle crash at a busy North Oakland intersection on Saturday afternoon, August 16, 2025.

According to the Oakland Police Department, the collision happened at about 2:25 p.m. at Shattuck Avenue, where 51st and 52nd streets intersect near the entrance to State Route 24.

Authorities said the cyclist, identified as Hongmei C., was struck by a westbound utility truck after entering the intersection. Hongmei sustained visible injuries and was transported to Highland Hospital, where she was pronounced dead later that evening at 9:25 p.m.

Police said the initial investigation indicates that Hongmei may have entered the intersection against a red light. Witnesses at the scene, including a doctor, attempted to help until emergency personnel arrived.

Hongmei’s death was the 17th traffic fatality in Oakland this year, according to local advocacy group Traffic Violence Rapid Response, which has called for urgent safety improvements at the intersection.

The Oakland Police Department said alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash.
