A woman was killed, and a man was injured in a head-on collision near Delhi in Merced County, on Thursday morning, August 13, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded around 10 a.m. near Sycamore Street, just north of Bloss Avenue. Authorities found evidence of a head-on collision involving an Audi SUV and a Chevrolet SUV.
Investigators said 33-year-old Jose H. of Turlock was driving the Audi southbound on Sycamore Street at a high rate of speed when the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic for an unknown reason and collided with the Chevrolet.
The Chevrolet was occupied by an 84-year-old man and an 83-year-old woman, both from Delhi. The woman was transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, where she later died. The man was taken to Emmanuel Medical Center in Turlock with moderate injuries.
CHP said witnesses reported that the suspect left the Audi and fled on foot following the collision. Officers located him in an orchard near Augusta Avenue and Sycamore Street. He was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Merced and later booked into Merced County Jail on suspicion of DUI and felony hit-and-run.
The CHP continues to investigate the fatal crash.
