A man was injured and his dog killed in a hit-and-run collision in Atherton on Friday morning, August 8, 2025.
According to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, the incident occurred around 7:40 a.m. as the victim was walking his Bernese mountain dog, Boe, across El Camino Real at Selby Lane inside the crosswalk.
Prosecutors said a green Ford van, allegedly driven by 71-year-old Lucio S. of Redwood City, was traveling at a high rate of speed and did not stop. The van struck the dog and ran over the man’s foot, causing him to fall. The victim required sutures for his injuries.
The driver fled the scene, but the incident was caught on video, allowing police to identify and locate Lucio. Prosecutors said the suspect admitted to driving the van and fleeing because he was scared.
Court records show the driver had been sentenced to 10 days in jail on July 11 after pleading no contest to drunk driving. He pleaded not guilty Tuesday to multiple charges, including hit-and-run causing injury and driving with a suspended license.
Lucio was released under the condition that he not drive and is scheduled to return to court on October 13 for a preliminary hearing.
