A 25-year-old man from Vallejo was killed after exiting his vehicle following a chain-reaction crash on Interstate Highway 280 in Daly City on Wednesday night, July 23, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 11:51 p.m. on the southbound I-280 near the 19th Avenue on-ramp.
The four-vehicle crash involved a Ford Edge SUV, a Chevy Trax, a Toyota Prius, and a Honda Civic. Only minor injuries were reported from the collision.
All four vehicles stopped in the number two lane of the freeway. The driver of the Civic, the last vehicle in line, exited the car and was standing beside it to exchange information when he was struck by a dark-colored coupe or sedan. The vehicle also hit the open door of one of the cars. The driver of the dark-colored vehicle did not stop and fled the scene.
The injured driver was transported to a hospital but later died from his injuries.
During the investigation, CHP arrested the driver of the Ford Edge on suspicion of driving under the influence. The Ford Edge was found to have recent damage from a prior collision, and it appeared the impaired driver continued driving despite major damage to the right front wheel, tire, and axle, ultimately contributing to the crash.
The incident remains under investigation.
