[07-19-2024] Humboldt County, CA – 25-Year-Old Pedestrian Killed After Getting Hit By Vehicle in Hoopa

A 25-year-old pedestrian was killed after getting hit by a vehicle in Hoopa, Humboldt County, on Friday evening, July 19, 2024. 

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened around 11:40 p.m. along SR-96, west of Shoemaker Road. 

Authorities stated that 25-year-old Joseph M. was struck by a 2015 Kia Soul after he stepped into the westbound lane of the freeway. Life-saving efforts were performed on the victim, but he succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at the scene. 

The responding officials have identified the driver of the Kia as 18-year-old Neo M. and his passenger as 19-year-old Dawnale R. Both went to the Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Station to report their involvement in the incident and cooperated with the investigation. 

As of this writing, it is unknown why the pedestrian stepped onto the freeway. Drugs, alcohol, and speeding were also being investigated as possible factors in the crash.
