A driver was killed, and a passenger was transported to a hospital following a high-speed crash on State Route 44 in Shasta County on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported around 12:22 a.m. near Inwood Road.
Investigators said a Nissan traveling eastbound on SR-44 veered left, crossed into the westbound lane, and struck a tree on the north shoulder. The driver suffered major traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A female passenger was transported to Mercy Hospital with suspected major injuries. Both occupants were identified as residents of Shingletown. CHP stated that alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors in the crash.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
