Two people were killed after a van collided with a stopped tractor-trailer on Interstate 5 near Newman in Stanislaus County, early Monday, June 22, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at around 2:25 a.m. on the southbound I-5.
A 2006 Dodge van traveling south failed to slow down and struck the rear of a 2001 Kenworth tractor-trailer that was stopped on the freeway.
The driver of the van, a 19-year-old Los Angeles man, and a front-seat passenger both suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. Authorities said it is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were factors.
The CHP continues to investigate the crash.
