A 63-year-old driver was killed, and a driver was injured following a bicycle vs. vehicle collision involving a suspected DUI in Bakersfield on Saturday night, May 25, 2024.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 9:14 p.m. on North Chester Avenue, South of McCord Avenue.
Authorities stated that a 28-year-old driver of a 2004 Chevrolet was traveling northbound on North Chester Avenue at an unknown speed when he struck a 63-year-old man on his bicycle westbound across North Chester Avenue. The driver failed to take evasive maneuvers, which resulted in the collision.
The victim sustained moderate to major injuries and was transported to Kern Medical, where he died. The driver was also injured and stayed on the scene to cooperate with the authorities.
Police said that DUI appears to be the factor in the crash. Any witnesses with information are asked to call CHP at (661) 396-6600.
No further information was released, and the authorities are gathering all the necessary details to determine the cause of the crash.
