A fatal traffic collision closed State Route 62 east of Twentynine Palms, San Bernardino County, on Friday morning, May 22, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 8:20 a.m. when a vehicle rolled over and caught fire on Highway 62 west of Cadiz Road.
Preliminary reports indicate that one of the vehicles was a hybrid, and its lithium-ion battery caught fire, trapping at least one person inside. A nearby brush also caught fire during the incident.
The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene around 10:38 a.m. Both directions of the highway were closed as of 11 a.m. while emergency personnel worked to clear the roadway and investigate the crash.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision.
