[05-17-2026] Butte County, CA – Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash on Highway 162 in Oroville

A man was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Highway 162 in Oroville, Butte County, on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded after receiving reports of a pedestrian down and in critical condition along Highway 162 near Kampong Court.

Emergency personnel found the victim, later identified by the Butte County Sheriff’s Office as Michael B., unresponsive at the scene. He was pronounced dead by first responders.

Investigators determined that the victim had been struck by a vehicle overnight between May 16 and May 17 while he was in the roadway. Evidence at the scene indicated that the vehicle involved was a gray Kia Telluride.

Using multiple investigative tools, including traffic camera systems, CHP identified a possible suspect vehicle and driver in connection with the crash. The vehicle was examined, and the driver interviewed, but no arrest has been made as the investigation continues.

CHP officials stated that the case will be submitted to the Butte County District Attorney’s Office with a recommendation to file charges for felony hit-and-run resulting in death or injury under California Vehicle Code section 20001(a).

Authorities continue to investigate the crash and are asking anyone with information to contact the Oroville CHP Area Office.
