One person was killed following a chain-reaction crash involving two vehicles and a semi-truck in La Mesa early Saturday morning, May 2, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 1:35 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 8 near Fletcher Parkway.
Authorities reported that a Volvo T680 semi-truck was traveling eastbound when it entered the path of a Ford Ranger traveling in the same direction, leading the pickup to crash into the rear of the semi. Shortly after, a Toyota C-HR collided with both vehicles.
The driver of the Ford Ranger, identified as 28-year-old Johnathan N. of El Cajon, was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
The driver and passenger of the Toyota were taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
Authorities stated that it is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision.
