The driver was killed, while three child passengers were injured after a single-vehicle speeding crash in San Jose on Wednesday evening, May 1, 2024.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal incident occurred along Highway 85, south of Cottle Road.
CHP officers said that a 38-year-old man from East Palo Alto was driving a 2002 Toyota Sequoia at over 65 miles per hour along Highway 85 with three children onboard.
For some reason, the driver veered from the left-hand lane, causing the Toyota to crash into a metal guardrail before ultimately coming to a stop right back on the left-hand lane of the highway.
The 38-year-old man, who was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt when the collision happened, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers then confirmed that the three child passengers, ages 2, 4, and 8, all suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
It is unclear if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident.
Additional information was not immediately available. CHP is still investigating.
